Museum Boxes

Take a piece of the Food Museum back to school with you!

The museum has a number of loans boxes that are available to hire for use in school. They contain historical objects on a variety of topics, with supporting written material and images. All of the objects can be handled and used to help pupils get a real feel for the past. Each box can be used for many subjects and as a starting point for activities such as creative writing, materials and further historical exploration.

Cost: £5 per box per week or £15 for four weeks (+VAT)

SECOND WORLD WAR

KS1, KS2 and KS3

Discover what life was like during the Second World War.

Contains objects such as: Gas mask, Evacuee Suitcase, Land Army Breeches, Helmet, Ration Book, Identity Cards.

ON THE FARM

EYFS, KS1 and KS2

What happened in the countryside in the past? How did they farm? What jobs did people do?

Contains objects such as: Bowler Hat, Pipe, Whetstone, Snaffle Bit, Buskins, Bird Scarer, Little Red Hen Story Bag.

VICTORIAN HOUSE AND HOME

KS1 and KS2

Discover Victorian homes. What did people have in their houses? What did people wear? What did they do for fun?

Contains objects such as: Hats, Washing Tongs, Darning Mushroom, Whip and Top, Box Brownie Camera and Flat Iron.

GYPSY TRAVELLERS

KS1 and KS2

Take a look at another culture and find out about Gypsy Traveller clothing, homes and more.

Contains objects such as: Pegs, China, Glassware, Dresses and Water Jacks.

COOKING AND THE KITCHEN

What did people in the past use in their kitchens? How did they cook? Can you work out what all the objects are? What are the equivalents in your home?

Contains objects such as: 1950s Toaster, Butter Pats, Mincer, Nutmeg Grater, Root Chopper, Scale Weights.

Explore toys from the past, play games, work out what they are made from and who may have played with them.

Contains objects such as: puppets, comics, jigsaw puzzles, figures, skittles and spinning tops.
