Name/TitleMandrel
About this objectThe mandrel was used to fit into the anvil hole for shaping metal. The tang fitting into the anvil hole is square in section. The tool becomes circular in section above the tang and after turning at right angles tapers to a point.
This was amongst the tools at the West Row Forge, worked by four generations of the same family. The last owner was apprenticed to his father at the age of 12, at a time when his father also had two of his own brothers working with him, and he took over the business on his father's death. However, trade had declined over the years, owing to the decrease in the number of horses on the land, and c. 1950 he gave up the forge altogether and went into farming instead.
