About this objectMade from an old file, this item was used for cutting off the nails from an old horseshoe in order to remove the shoe. The centre shaft is rectangular in section; at each end a piece has been shaped at right angles to the shaft: a flat one head shape at one end, with a cutting edge, and a punch shape, square in section, tapering to a point at the other end. The donor's husband, was the fourth generation of his family to work the West Row Forge. He was apprenticed to his father from the age of 12 at a time when his father had two of his brothers working with him. The donor's husband gave up in circa 1950 and went into farming, after a decline in the number of horses being used on the farms led to a lack of shoeing work.
