Name/TitleCord guard
About this objectThis object was used by the donor between 1919 and 1932 to prevent the cords, (plough lines) from being trodden on by the horses when the plough was being turned. The object was made in Debden in 1919 by the Debden blacksmith. It was used near Bury St Edmunds.
The donor started as ploughman when he left school in 1908, aged 14. He was born at near Lakenheath, where his father was managing a farm and worked for his father, who moved to Debden and rented Debden Hall from Lord Bristol, until he went into the army in 1914. He returned to Debden Hall after the war and used the cord guard there on a Ransome's TL plough. He took the guard with him when he started his own farm at Nettlestead in 1932. In 1938 he took over a farm in Creeting St. Mary (112 acres) with five horses (some Suffolks, some Shires) and one tractor. He continued using 4 horses until he retired in 1946.
