Name/TitleReaping Hook
About this objectA reaping hook with a cranked handle. A tang passes through the handle and is turned over. The handle is turned to fit the palm. The upper end of the blade is marked: 'IH 2.' This tool was generally used for cutting cereal and bean crops. The crop is chopped and then collected by means of the hook. It was often collected against the leg of the labourer and then formed into a sheaf. It was also an efficient means of cutting the crop when badly laid (for more see Freams, Elements of Agriculture (8th Edition, p.96). This example was presumably used by the donor, a shoemaker, but under what circumstances is not known.
