About this objectAn anvil swage used by a farrier/blacksmith which would have been fitted into the square hole in the anvil block. This particular swage was used at the former works of Smyth and Sons of Peasenhall.
Swages are used for shaping and reducing metal jobs into hexagonal or round forms. Swages are made with semi-grooves of dimensions suiting the particular reduction work. They may be in separate top/bottom halves, connected through spring steel strip so that the blacksmith can use it without external assistance.
