About this objectAn iron tool which was used in conjunction with a steam-hammer to round bars of metal in the same way as a normal bottom swage. This particular swage was used at the former works of Smyth and sons at Peasenhall.
Swages are used for shaping and reducing metal jobs into hexagonal or round forms. Swages are made with semi-grooves of dimensions suiting the particular reduction work. They may be in separate top/bottom halves, connected through spring steel strip so that the blacksmith can use it without external assistance.
