Name/TitleSieve
About this objectThis was used by the donor's father at Groton, of which parish he was Rector. It was used for separating the cabbage seeds from the 'colder' (the term used by the donor to mean the rest of the plant - stalk etc.). The cabbages were spread on the ground and then ridden over by a horse to break the pods open - an easy task when they are dry and brittle. Different sizes of sieves were then used to gradually separate out the seeds - this one having the widest mesh and being the first to be used in the process. This sieve was last used in the above manner around 1920.
