About this objectThis item is a black ornately brocaded skirt which has a matching jacket. It is hand sewn, fastening with large hooks and eyes. It has a large pocket. The front of the skirt is decorated with a treble line of black braid each side and two large eyes inside the skirt for holding in position. The skirt is shaped to allow a bustle, and the back forms a train. This is part of the collection of clothes belonging to Misses D. and M. Burling, of Swaffham Bulbeck, Cambridgeshire, who were aunts of the donor.
The clothes were made by the Hancock family at The Laurels Swaffham Bulbeck in 1850 - 1900, who were members of a farming family.
