About this objectBARNACLE (CATTLE LEAD)
The donor, was farm manager at Rookery Park and still worked there in 1982, aged nearly 70years. The estate was mainly rented out for grazing. The owner, lived mainly in America and only visited occasionally. The ' Barnacle' was used for leading animals by the nose. This example has a spring to keep the ring in place when the device is to stay closed. A rivet holds the two halves in place. When extended the barnacle measures 10.5cms across and 12cms long. A rope is attached measuring 250cms. Three knots are tied in the handheld end to stop the rope slipping and to give a better hold to the cowman.
