Name/TitleApple Box
About this objectThis is a half bushel apple box, rectangular in shape with hand holds cut in each end. The corners are reinforced inside with wooden triangular pieces reaching the whole depth of the box; these protrude above the top of the box to allow for the uneven level of a full box of fruit, and to permit ventilation across the top of the box.
The letters on the side of the box are usually the initials of the farmer, enabling the empty box to be returned after marketing. Wire reinforcements are held in place, at each corner, with small staples. This item was subsequently re-used as a tool box.
