Name/Titletrolley
About this objectPart of saw bench (81.A.42). A trolley that ran on rails to transport unsawn timber to and from a saw bench. The timber would have been supported by two trolleys - one at either end – helping to hold the trunk in position whilst it was sawn into smaller elements. This trolley was used at Westley Sawmills, part of the former Rothschild estate near Bury St Edmunds.
Trolleys or bogies have been used since the 1800s, to support heavy items being transported on rails. They often have a four or six-wheel configuration, and provide the driving system for trains or simply for carrying loads.
