Name/TitleHand plough
About this objectUsed by the donor's uncle, Charles Pamphilon, in the inter-war years, at 66 Newmarket Road, Bury. The plough has two front wheels, works on a cable with a chain and ratchet, and operates between two iron stakes. The handle, T-shaped with wooden grips (bearing traces of red paint) is moved backwards and forwards to provide motive power.
The donor believes that Mr. Pamphilon, who was an engineer, apprenticed with Cornish & Lloyd's and subsequently employed by Boby's at Bury, designed and made the plough himself. At the time when he used the plough, there was about an acre of land with the house which he used for growing vegetables. He died in 1975, aged 93.
