Name/TitleHorse clippers
About this objectThese clippers were used by the donor's father, Herbert Newson (1880-1956), from the early 20th century. Mr Newson was born and brought up in Suffolk but lived in Sussex until 1911, when he returned to Suffolk upon his marriage. He lived at Peasenhall, where he was a groom at a private house. He was invalided out of WW1 and was unable to work full-time thereafter, but he did use the clippers on occasions for friends. The clipping was generally done on horses flanks, on riding and carriage horses, and was known as 'trace clipping' (fide Mr C. Fisk, a former farm worker, a neighbour of the donor.) It is contained in the original box. The head of the clippers are protected by a leather case
Medium and MaterialsClippers are of steel with brass nuts and ferrules, and with wooden handles which are painted red.
