About this objectThis row marker was probably used for root crops and brassicas and was found in a shed of a retired farmer. The donor remembers them in use in Norfolk in fields and gardens, particularly smallholdings in the Norwich area in 1920's. When in use the first tine was inserted in the last row marked. The first mark was made against the line set out.
Medium and MaterialsThe tines are made of flat pieces of wood (ash) secured to the head (steel) with nuts, bolts and washers.
MeasurementsLength of handle: 155cms.; Width of head: 85cms.; Length of tines: ave. 26cms.
The tines are set above and below the head, one set spaced at intervals of 30cms., the other set at intervals of 23.5cms. Both sets are 3 tines each, shaped to a point.
