About this objectA wooden scythe with a steel blade. A horseshoe nail is used to hold the grass nail in place on the handle. The position of the grass nail fixture on the handle shows signs of having been altered. Stamped on the blade of the tool is ‘W. Tyzack & Co Ltd. / Stella Works / Sheffield’. The scythe was last used by the donor c.1940-74 in the parish of Gestlingthorpe. It was used primarily for keeping down rough grass around the farm. The original owner is not known - it was given to the donor by an old man who had used it for many years.
