Name/TitleMedallion case
About this objectRobert Baldwin, who farmed Edgar's Farm, Combs, Stowmarket, from 1877 until his death in 1898. Made of silver, it is contained in a leather case lined with white silk and blue velvet. On one side the medallion bears the coat of arms of the Poulters' (sic Company) and on the reverse: PRIZE GIVEN BY THE WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF POULTERS LONDON R. BALDWIN, within a circular laurel wreath. The coat of arms also appears on the lid, above the words PRIZE FOR TABLE POULTRY; all in gilt.
At that period the donor says that the farm concentrated more on the production of poultry than of crops. She was unable to say which year the medal was won, but believes it was for dressed poultry for a Christmas market at Smithfield, London. Mr Baldwin regularly sent poultry to Smithfield, was well as supplying several London firms who used to give their staff turkeys as "Christmas boxes".
