About this objectThis was used for threshing corn (and beans?) on the barn threshing floor, at Stradbroke. It consists of a staff, swingle and a ferrule and loop. The type is unusual,, it has no wooden loop to act as a universal joint, but an iron ferrule at the tip of the staff forms a socket in which an iron pin is inserted. An iron ring, held by a washer, revolves in this and is merely attached to the swingle by a leather thong which is tied to the ring and passes through a hole in the swingle, to which it is tied.
