Name/TitleSwage Anvil
About this objectAn iron anvil swage tool used for forming the ends of drill levers (the end to which the weight was attached). This particular tool, used by Smyth and Sons of Peashenhall, would be for a small drill. Levers could be obtained in either round or square section in the finished drill, according to the farmer's requirements. The top face of this tool is marked with three short horizontal parallel lines.
Swages are used for shaping and reducing metal jobs into hexagonal or round forms. Swages are made with semi-grooves of dimensions suiting the particular reduction work. They may be in separate top/bottom halves, connected through spring steel strip so that the blacksmith can use it without external assistance.
