About this objectThis tool was used to hold a heavy bar of metal in the steam hammer.
A 'collar' would be hammered over the ends of the handles to prevent them opening and the metal slipping. The tongs were held with the elbow bent and away from the body, to prevent injury if the metal moved when being struck with the hammer.
