Name/TitleBlade Sharpener
About this objectA cast-iron blade sharpener with a wooden handle. This object was made by a Mr McCormick and was used at Burgh, Suffolk. The sharpener would have been attached to either a gate-post or a mower itself for sharpening blades. The handle drives an iron ‘stone’ through a series of five geared wheels. The ‘stone’ can be raised or lowered through 90°. The blades would be placed with the top side facing the ‘stone’ so that two edges could be sharpened at once. The sharpener was used in the upright position on a gate-post or leg-vice, but in the ‘folded-over’ position when on the mower. This tool was suitable for both grass-mower and binder blades.
