Name/TitleScythe
About this objectA scythe with a steel blade and an ash handle and sneed. The wooden grip is missing off the lower handle. The hooked part of the tang of the blade is driven into a strip of galvanized iron, fastened around the snead at 3 1/2 inches from the end. An iron socket secures the tang with two iron wedges. This tool was used by the donor’s father, a wheelwright and latterly a builder, who died in 1971, aged 72. He had his workshop at ‘Wayside’, Stansfield, where there was an acre of ground, part of it under grass, which he used to cut with the scythe.
