Name/TitleSmock
About this objectThis drabette was manufactured by Gurteens of Haverhill at the Syleham Mill. The yarn was imported from Lancashire. The cut of the neck of this buff smock allows it to be reversed and put on back to front, a hook and eye having been fitted on both sides. There are two buttons on each sleeve.
Smocks were worn by agricultural workers as well as other workers such as wagoners and gravediggers. Common until the 1880s in rural districts, when the advent of machine looms made clothing cheaper. They were cut simply to allow movement and ease of use.
