About this objectThis was used by the donor's father, who practised as a veterinary surgeon during World War I and later at Long Melford. Made of steel and stamped 'PATENT', the part to be removed is secured by a loop in the chain and twisted off. According to Mr. Mackintosh, veterinary surgeon, of Shorter, Mackintosh and Webster, Crowe Street, Stowmarket, this was used for the removal of mares' ovaries. Hatrick's Catalogue (1932) gives it as a castrating instrument, and the dictionary as for the removal of tumours.
