Name/TitleBox Drill
About this objectThis box drill was used 60 years ago (c.1910) by William Smith at Barnard's Hall, Whatfield (then owned by William Matthew Nunn).
This seems to be a very early type. It consists of a wooden box with hinged lid for insertion of the seed. The underside is pierced by 72 holes, in groups of six, and fitted with two slides by which the holes can be opened or closed.
In use the drill was held transversely and oscillated to expel the seed. It is unpainted.
