Name/TitleBarrow Drill
About this objectA barrow broadcast drill used by the donor's family from the early to mid 19th century to the 1960s. The seed was placed in the box and dispensed by the brushes. It is a broadcast machine, scattering the seed on the surface, not a drill which deposits it in the ground. Another form has cups instead of brushes. This example has 21 rotating bristle brushes operating over circular plates. The brushes would rotate and perforate to adjust the flow of seed, and the brush spindle rotated by cogs on the wheel of the barrow.
