Richard Hall, Research Volunteer:
This object in our collection is commonly found in clubs and public houses. However, should you happen to visit either, you would probably never get to see it!
It is a barrel stand and would have been used to secure beer barrels on their sides. The shape of the stand prevents barrels from moving while they are being used, thereby allowing any sediment left in the beer to drop to the bottom of the barrel, without affecting the quality of the beer itself. Barrels are also tapped from holes in the top of the barrel which means that, when in use, a barrel must be laid on its side to allow an effective flow of beer either from the tap or into the pipes, from where it flows to the pump in the bar.
This stand was used to hold barrels containing 4½ gallons of beer, but it also has a ratchet mechanism, which would suggest that it might be capable of holding slightly different sizes of barrel, or barrels from different breweries. It was originally used at the premises of the Royal British Legion Club in Tavern Street, Stowmarket.
