About this objectThis shoe was for the off-side hind foot and was used for shows. Made by the donor who was 84 in 1969. The shoe has 3 holes on either side and a clip in the centre. The maker was trained originally as a wheelwright and then as a smith with his grandfather. He had various jobs in his youth including a short time as a waiter. He played the organ in local churches and in the workhouse and was also a bell ringer. He served in the First World War as a shoe-smith with the cavalry and he played the organ in the garrison church in Cairo. Eventually he bought the smithy in which his grandfather had worked and was still shoeing horses at the time of accession.
