Name/TitleTractor
About this objectA small hand tractor used to draw various implements - plough, hoe, etc. It has two levers (brake and gear). The epicycle clutch is controlled from the right shaft. Single cylinder. Petrol tank holds 1 gallon. It has a draw-bar below the shafts at the rear.
The following information was obtained from the donor in a telephone conversation on 21st May 1975. The tractor and plough, hoe, etc. were purchased new from Nunns of Elmswell by the donor c.1951 or 1952 and cost £156. It was used solely for hoeing sugar beet on a five acre smallholding which formed part of the donor's total 30 acres. Until its acquisition, this hoeing had been carried out by a horse hoe, needing two men to do the work. The advantage of the Trusty was that one man could steer at the same time as the hoeing was being done, thus saving manpower. However, it proved to be quite unstable when in use, and could easily run out of true, necessitating the man stopping and re-aligning it manually. It was therefore replaced by a Tractor hoe of the type which was mounted on a tool bar c.1954 - 1955.
