About this objectA very fine example of a 'best' smock with shoulder pieces, cuffs and worked both front and back. It has 10 buttons to the waist and four more to the skirt.
Best smocks, made from finer linen than the working smock, were elaborately decorated and reached the height of perfection in the early 1800's. Made in 1865-70, it was formerly in the possession of The Marchioness of Bristol, the grandmother of the donor.
