Name/TitleCavings Fork
About this objectThis was used to remove the cavings (short straw) from under the drum. It is probably blacksmith-made, c. 1930, the iron D-handle suggests a late date. It has two tines with the upper section of the tines recurved to catch the cavings.
According to Mr. E.R.E. Mack, of Pond Farm, Bodham, Norfolk, this is not a cavings fork, but a barley-gathering fork, used to gather in loose barley out with the sickle. STMEA:A.1988, which has three tines, he says is a cavings fork.
