Name/TitleBeet fork
About this objectThis tool would have been used for "heaving the beet out", the worker inserting it into the ground beside the root and placing his foot on it like a spade. One worker normally used the fork, while another followed to pull the beet out by hand.
This example was never used at Red House Farm (according to the Donors), neither was any beet ever pulled there, since cultivation of beet started there in 1930 and horse or tractor beet lifters were used. The tool was purchased as part of a lot at a farm workers' sale.
The owner and presumably user was from Helmingham, and had either died or moved away, hence the sale.
