Name/TitleOil painting of tithe sale
About this objectThis is a painting depicting a tithe sale at donor's farm, at a sale of livestock by distraint at the farm in 1936. In 1936 a Tithe Bill was introduced which made the tithe rent charge a personal debt. If a farmer resisted paying tithes, goods could be seized and sold by distraint. In the foreground are Mr. A.G. Mobbs and Lady Eve Balfour (3rd and 4th from left respectively) both Suffolk farmers who were involved in the tithe disputes in the 1930s. Third from the right is Mr R.H. Rash, next to whom is Mr Makens Turner. Mr Mobbs was chairman of the Suffolk Tithe-Payers Association. The auctioneer was Mr Haywood Smith.
