Name/TitleMarket cart
About this objectThis is a panel and rail sided vehicle with a hand brake to the rear wheel and is sprung front and rear. Drawn by a "van horse" (similar to hackney) it was used to take pigs to market in Ipswich (some six miles away) a net being spread to prevent them jumping out.
When motor transport took over these journeys, it was used for delivering milk to the dairy in Woodbridge until the early 1930s, when the Milk Marketing Board itself began collecting directly form the farms.
This cart was used by the donor's father, Raymond Keer at Great Bealings Hall, who was Secretary of the Suffolk Horse Society, which promoted the local breed of horse, the Suffolk Punch.
