About this objectThis instrument (also known as a (Farrier's Gag - Balling Iron), was used to open the horse's mouth for examination, and to administer medicine. A specimen in the York Castle Museum has an adjustable ring, sliding in slots in the 'U' and is secured by means of butterfly nuts.
