Name/TitlePlough
About this objectRansomes patented this plough design in 1836 and by 1840 produced more than 80 types, designed to suit the various soil types across the country.
August 1986. Further information from Mr. L.J. Orvis, Ransomes, Sims & Jefferies Works Historian:
"The first ploughs of which we have a record were marked 'A' and letters 'B', 'C', etc. were added as modifications were made, ending with the 'AY'. For some reason the next range of similar general purpose ploughs had the prefix 'Y', e.g. 'YL', 'YX' and so on. 'D' added to this range signified double, as in 'YLDA', but this must not be confused with the 'D' in the mark of semi-digging ploughs like 'IRDCP'. In this series 'DCP' meant double-chilled plough. Unfortunately we were not always consistent, as sometimes the 'D' was omitted from chilled plough marks, i.e. 'LCP' was for Lincolnshire and Scotland."
