Name/TitleHoe turnip (pick)
About this objectThe hoe was used for removing turnip 'shells' after the sheep had eaten them down to ground level. In this way the root, which contains an acrid juice detrimental to the stomach of the sheep is left in the ground. (Stephens' Book of the Farm' 4th ed. 1888, Division 1, pp 176-7, fig. 80.)
