About this objectThe spurtle is a wooden kitchen tool from Scotland, believed to date from around the 15th century. It is used to stir porridge, soups, stews and broths. The rod-like shape is designed for constant stirring which helps eliminate lumps and prevents the porridge from congealing, unlike a spoon, which would have a dragging effect during stirring.
This is a commemorative spurtle from the 2023 World Porridge Making Championship in Carrbridge, Scotland. The donor was the winner of the Golden Spurtle in 2019 and 2022, and donated this wooden spurtle to the museum whilst on route to the 2023 championship in hopes of defending her title.
Competitors come to Carrbridge in the Highlands from across the world with their own recipes and techniques. The championship is held on the Saturday nearest to World Porridge Day (10th October). The only ingredients allowed are oatmeal, salt and water. The donor was the
