Name/TitleMancur Balance
About this objectMancur balance used to weigh grain. The central feature of this balance is a strip of iron with a lengthwise hole at each end, curved into a near circle with the holes overlapping. From a small pivot at the end of the outer strip hangs a pointer with a forked end, which straddles a large metal crescent. This follows the line of and is firmly attached to the inner side of the near circle. On both sides of this crescent is a scale: on one side it is 0 to 50 and on the other side it is 20 to 400 treating the little pivot as 12 o'clock. There is a small hook at 1 o'clock, a larger hook at about 3.30, a large ring at about 8.30 and a smaller ring at 11 o'clock.
The accuracy of this type of balance could not be guaranteed and its use became illegal.
