Name/TitleTongs
About this objectThis iron tool was probably used for holding heavy sections of iron while they were worked by the steam hammer. It is possible that the ring, which is attached to the end of one handle and can fit over any of five spikes formed in the end of the other handle, was a form of 'collar' to hold the handles in place and prevent them from slipping and allowing the iron to move.
The mouth-end of the spiked handle has a series of grooves cut across its surface to prevent the slipping of the material being held.
These tongs were almost certainly not used after 1916.
