Name/TitleHand plough
About this objectPlough painted in a greenish-blue colour. It was used by the owner for his allotment of 20 rods (approximately 2/3 acres) near Bramford. The plough was pulled by its owner using a rope attached to the curved axle bar, with the rope pulled over his shoulder.
The object was bought by the donor from an elderly neighbour circa 1946, who constructed it and used it on a nearby allotment owned by them. It was in use until 1960.
The owners of these allotments helped each other with this kind of job, as a second man was needed to steer the plough by holding the handles.
The plough worked well on softish ground, going about 8 inches deep. The wheels are solid. Each section has been welded together. There are various interchangeable attachments: a combined share and mould board, two 5-tined harrows, three scoops, one hoe.
The bolts with holes in the ends are to fit the mould board, hoe and harrows. The bolts that have a normal nut of the threaded end are to fit the scoops. The scoops and harrows fit onto the outer ends of the toolbar. Three miscellaneous bolts and nuts have been inserted into one of the scoops for safe keeping.
