Name/TitleBit ( Spring Bit )
About this objectThe spring bit is a piece of material that fits on the mouth of a horse and is part of the bridle, enabling the rider to be linked to the horse through the reins. The shanks, rings, cheek pads and Mullen make up the bit. The bit sits on the head of a horse through the headstall whilst the Mullen sits across the mouth of a horse between its incisors and molars. The bit, bridle and reigns give the rider control of the head of a horse as the bit help the rider communicate with the horse. Once in the mouth of the horse, the bit enables the rider to put pressure inside it to control the speed and direction of the horse. This is important for breaking during horse riding. There are numerous types of bits that horses can wear including the snaffle bit, curb bit and pelham bit.
