About this objectThe moving parts, ornamental ends and axle of the scales are of iron, black in colour while the rest of the scales are made of wood that is green.
The scales rest on a strong frame of battens. There is one batten upright at each of the four corners and there are two along each side with various strengthening supports including ornamental end pieces of ironwork. Attached at the front are two small wheels on a fixed axle . The top two battened extend backwards as shared handles. At about the centre of the two top battens they are joined by a strong iron bridge which supports a rocking mechanism. The rocking mechanism has two arms lengthwise moving inside.
Parallel with the battens at the wheels end of the mechanism is an octagonal iron plate for weights. At the handles end of the mechanism on a higher level is a large scoop like pan with its back over the handles and its opening just over the plate.
Used by the donor's grandfather at Kersey.
