Name/TitlePony harness-bridle
About this objectPart of a pony harness, made of light brown leather and with brass fittings.
Information from the donor: According to her grandmother, this is probably a mixture of two types of harness, (a) a pony cart harness, used in connection with butcher's carts belonging to the donor's grandfather's business, A. G. Baggott and Sons, of Southwold. Her grandfather drove one of these during the First World War on a round from Southwold to Walberswick. (b) a pony harness from a Shetland pony bought for the donor's sister when she was young. It came from the family's farm at Raydon, which was used as a storage place for cattle and as a slaughterhouse for the butcher's shop. Further information from the donor's aunt, in a letter of 10th Nov. '75.: " In my young days we used to have a pony and box cart, which grannie used to drive around the county in World War I. We also had a little governess cart, and then we had a very smart brass-trimmed 'gig', so may be some of the gear you had was used on them."
