In 2001 Justin Partyka set out to discover what was left of the old-ways of East Anglia. For ten years he criss-crossed the rural agricultural counties of Norfolk and Suffolk exploring the fields, backroads, tracks and ways with his camera. On his travels Partyka encountered some of the last traditional small farms. There were remnants of East Anglian's old agrarian way of life.
Justin Partyka's photographs show a rural world that is deeply unknown to many. It is a place where traditional methods and knowledge are deeply rooted; where the past continues to exist in the present. He describes the farmers he came to know as "the forgotten people of the flatlands." Partyka has spent many hours in the fields as the farmers worked, patiently watching how man and the land intimately shape together. As his photographs reveal, this experience offered a glimpse into the mystery of this ancient relationship between labour and earth.
First exhibited as the East Anglians- a major solo show at the Sainsbury Centre, Norwich (2009)- this set of works has also been shown at Gainsborough's House, Eleven Spitalfields gallery, the Boutographies photo festival in Montpellier, and the Museum of English Rural Life at the University of Reading. Selected works have also been exhibited at Tate Britain and Osborne Samuel gallery, amongst other venues. Publications include Granta Magazine, Granta Sweden magazine, the Guardian weekend Magazine, The Drawbridge, Random Spectacular, and the sold out limited edition book Field Work.
