Volunteer Week

Looking for something different to do this February half-term? Why not join in with the Museum of East Anglian Life’s Volunteer Week!

Running from Saturday 10th February – Saturday 17th February, 10am-3pm, volunteering is a fantastic way to give back, meet new people and be part of the active community of volunteers at the museum. There’s no commitment, whether you’d like to join in one of the sessions, or become a permanent volunteer at the museum, everyone is welcome.

All the activities are family friendly and we encourage family groups to come together and take part. Volunteer Week is a great way to build your CV, contribute to a Duke of Edinburgh award or help University applications stand out from the crowd. We have tasks available for a wide range of skills and abilities, there will be something for all ages to get involved with.

Programme of activities

Saturday 10th February: Join the museum’s Estate Team clearing wildlife areas to encourage new growth and undertake a tree survey within our woodland area. Remember to wrap up warm and wear sensible footwear, tea and coffee will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.

Tuesday 13th February:  Spring Cleaning the Displays – Help to blow away the cobwebs, gather up the leaves and clean away the dust as part of our annual spring clean behind the scenes at the museum. With lots of buildings and areas to tackle, we will work together to help prepare the Museum ready for the 2018 season. Basic training will be given and all equipment provided. Wear warm clothes and expect to get a bit grubby. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be supplied.

Wednesday 14th February: Want to know more about conservation? Today the Estate Team are working on the river trail, brush cutting, litter picking and clearing woodland areas and fencing. Remember to wrap up warm and wear sensible footwear, tea and coffee will be provided but please bring a packed lunch.

Thursday 15th – Activity Room re-vamp – help the museum to tidy up and re-paint our Activity Room ready for another year of exciting family activities. We are also looking for people with woodworking and carpentry skills to create some proper storage in the room for all the resources we use. Hot chocolate and marshmallows will be supplied for all volunteers.

Friday 16th – Search for the Stars: Help us with our new collections project for 2017! The project, Search for the Stars, will make our whole collection more accessible to the public and identify new ‘star’ objects. The first step is to transfer all the information from our collection records from index cards onto an online system. This will help us create an online collections catalogue, so the public can see our objects even if they can’t come to the museum. We need your help to get the records online. All you need is basic IT skills – just enough to send an email! This is a great chance to find out more about our collection and the fascinating stories behind it. It’s also a fun way to gain versatile skills such as data management and interpretation. Plus, the day will end with a free, ‘behind the scenes’ tour of the collection stores!

Saturday 17th – Search for the Stars (see Friday 16th for details)
