Factory Update 🏗️ We've had great progress on Th Factory Update 🏗️

We've had great progress on The Factory – the roof is now complete, with just the lightning protection still to go. Inside, work on the internal floor structure is well underway.

For those who've asked about the housemartins, we hear you, and we've been thinking of them too. We completed a full ecology report before building work began and are following our ecologist's advice every step of the way. A section of the outer scaffolding will begin coming down shortly, right in time for nesting season. Our resident bird spotters haven't reported any sightings on site just yet, so fingers crossed we're ahead of their arrival! 🐦

And yes, pictured here is our Director, marking the topping out of the roof and holding on for dear life at the windy heights!
Don't let the scaffolding fool you – The House is Don't let the scaffolding fool you – The House is open and welcoming as ever! While we work on giving our exterior a new lease of life, everything inside remains just as you know it. Explore our permanent exhibition and catch Akenfield Revisited before it's gone.

School dinners are making headlines 🍎 The governm School dinners are making headlines 🍎 The government has just announced the biggest overhaul of school food in a generation: less deep-fried food, more fruit and veg. But is this really new territory? Our School Dinners exhibition explores how school food has evolved over the years and what it tells us about childhood, culture and change. Come for a visit and discover the world of school dinners.

Free with museum entry. 🍽️
Food for Thought is back for Series 3, presented b Food for Thought is back for Series 3, presented by The Food Museum as part of our School Dinners exhibition — bringing together food historians, dinner ladies and campaigners to explore the history and lived experience of school food.

This month we're joined by Jeanette Orrey MBE — once a school dinner lady, now a national campaigner who transformed school meals at a Nottinghamshire primary, co-founded Food for Life, and helped reshape children's food policy across the UK.

She'll be exploring how school meals can drive real change: better nutrition, local food sourcing, and helping children understand where their food comes from.

Spring Feast – Sunday 26 April, 12pm–3pm Join bak Spring Feast – Sunday 26 April, 12pm–3pm

Join baker Rebecca Bishop (founder of Two Magpies) and Food Anthropologist Bee Farrell from the Suffolk Guild of Food Writers for an afternoon of seasonal food, conversation, and inspiration from celebrated food writers.

The discussion will be accompanied by a specially curated spring menu inspired by Patience Gray's Honey from a Weed – a celebration of seasonal, foraged food that beautifully blends frugality and abundance. As spring emerges around the Museum, we want to capture that sense of exciting potential in every dish. The menu is prepared by our Head of Learning.

🍽️ Menu
Goats' ricotta dumplings in spring broth with ramson capers
Roasted lamb rack, new potatoes and green garlic alioli
Rhubarb, orange blossom and almond sponge with blackthorn cream
Burnt House pinot meunier rosé
Spring mint cordial

£30 per person | Booking essential

As part of the Kitchen Project, we’re exploring the role of food in the home: how we cook, learn, share and connect through it.

We’d love your input:
What’s your must-have cookbook and why?
Where do you find your recipes?
What kitchen tool can’t you live without?
Share your answers below and help us tell this story.

This project is generously funded by @heritagefunduk and @midsuffolk.

We're Open – Please be aware that we have building work happening on site. Come and see the exciting changes happening at the Museum.

Our magnificent Medieval Barn is temporarily closed for repairs and will reopen in June 2026.

The House remains open while exterior works take place, before closing in 2027 for renovations — reopening with fresh exhibitions about food-making in the home.

The Factory is closed until March 2027 as we create brand new displays about industrial food production, accessible visitor toilets, and a stunning first-floor events space.
